Philippine cargo ship MV Aztec Maiden ran ashore the coast of Wijk aan Zee in The Netherlands around 4:45 in the morning of January 20, 2011. 21 crew members aboard the ship are all Filipinos. Again, social media has done its fair share in updating the public.

MV Aztec Maiden sailed from Amsterdam on the evening of Thursday,
January 19. However, after leaving the locks, it turned back and ended
aground on the north sea coast of Wijk aan Zee. The ship, upon calling the Royal Dutch Rescue Organisation, pointed to a faulty anchor. -

The Dutch Coast Guard tried its best to pull the ship free but with the
length of 155 meters, MV Aztec Maiden is not a small ship. Cables did
not hold during the first and second attempts according to this
witness… -
They also offered to free the crew on the ship but the captain did not
permit it. All 21 men in the ship remained inside during the whole
period of stranding. A coast guard chopper kept close watch to report
any sign of oil leak. -
After the first attempts, a rescue operation was scheduled again at 3:00 p.m. Dutch time on Friday, January 20. But due to weather conditions, it had to be postponed. It has been stormy in The Netherlands the last few days.
-
But just like what the Dutch say, “Elk nadeel heeft z’n voordeel” (rough translation: ‘Every disadvantage has its advantage’). If MV Aztec Maiden did not beach on the north sea, these wonderful images would not have been made.
-
The Aztec Maiden drew a lot of observers. It was an overnight sensation in the menacing sea. Cafes in the area even remained open because of the whole vessel drama.

Along with these events, the Royal Dutch Police investigates the facts
around the stranding of the ship. MV Aztec Maiden carries no cargo at the time of beaching. Images also show that after leaving Amsterdam, it went back to Holland. It remains a mystery where the ship was headed. -
