Good Comms | Communication for good

My story on the IABC EMENA podcast

The IABC EMENA Podcast has always been more than a platform for communication professionals—it’s been a space to amplify diverse voices and share ideas that inspire change. As I step into the role of host, I’m honored to continue this legacy and bring my own twist to the show.

In our latest episode, we mark a momentous transition as Monique Zytnik, the voice of the podcast for the past four years, hands over the reins. Monique has skillfully guided the podcast, showcasing the best of what the EMENA region has to offer. Her reflections on her proudest moments, challenges, and lessons from behind the mic are a treasure trove of inspiration for anyone who loves storytelling.

During this episode, I share my journey—from my roots in the Philippines to my career as a journalist and communication consultant in the Netherlands. I also discuss my passion for creating inclusive workplaces, fueled by my research into belonging at work, which led to my ACES framework: Authenticity, Care, Empowerment, and Support.

Some highlights

Some of the highlights we talked about include insights from my research. A sense of belonging:

  • boosts job performance by 56%
  • lowers turnover risk by 50%
  • is directly tied to the relationship between employees and their managers

I also talked about how I weave in inclusion in my work as communication consultant, facilitator and coach.

Finding my voice

When I first sat down to record this episode, I didn’t expect the experience to be so personal. Yes, I was stepping into the role of host and preparing to share my vision for the future of the podcast, but it became much more than that.

In sharing my story, I also found my voice. Monique’s interest in my research and the work I do, including the challenges I’ve faced made me feel that I matter and that my purpose of using communication as a force for good matters.

What's next for the podcast?

Building on the strong foundation Monique has laid, I’m excited to spotlight even more underrepresented voices from the EMENA region and beyond. My goal is to create conversations that don’t just inform but challenge and inspire us to think differently.

Here’s what you can expect:

  • Insights from communication professionals AND experts from other fields who bring fresh perspectives.
  • Discussions on existentialist topics for communication professionals.
  • Practical takeaways to help communicators thrive in a complex, fast-changing world.

Personal thank you to Monique

Monique’s dedication and expertise have made this podcast a global touchpoint for communication excellence. Her advice to “enjoy every moment” is something I’ll carry with me as I take on this new role. Thank you, Monique, for setting the stage so beautifully!
